School textbooks are heavy, static, and out of date the year after they are printed. You cannot search one, it cannot show you a worked example that responds to what you typed, and it certainly cannot tell you which mark you just lost. Every other tool a Year 12 student uses has moved on. The core learning material has not.

Study Smart Academy is building the replacement: a digital textbook for SACE Year 12 that you read, answer, and get marked in — with the marking grounded in a written set of marks for the course rather than in whatever a model felt like saying that day.

That grounding is the whole design. Before a course opens, an editor writes its marks: one point each, strictly defined, for the entire subject. Your answer is judged against the ones that apply to the question in front of you, in the same words, every time. It is a slower way to build a course, and it is the only way we know to make “you keep losing this one” a sentence the software can honestly say.

Everything else follows. The progress page can rank your weaknesses because each mark has a name. The recall deck knows what to bring back because it knows what you got wrong. And a human editor reviews the answers the marking was least sure about, which is how the marking gets better rather than merely more confident.

What we are deliberately not building

• An exam system. No invigilation, no timed sessions, no grade that goes on a record. This is a textbook you can practise in, and treating it as an assessment would change what a student is willing to get wrong in it.
• Something that writes your assignment. It marks work you have written. Feedback on work you did not do is worth nothing.
• Twenty subjects at once. Five, written properly, opening Term 4, 2026. Each needs its marks written before a single answer is marked, and that is not a thing to rush.
